Q&A with Jerrod Heard: Texas is not soft

Posted February 4th, 2014

In a preview for national signing day, Denton Guyer quarterback Jerrod Heard sat down for a length Q-and-A session with the American-Statesman. Subscribers can read the entire interview here.

If you read the entire piece, you can tell Heard clearly wants to be the player who leads Texas back to the national championship game.

Q: You are coming into a situation where the QB position is wide open. Do you feel you can compete for the starting job?

A: You just have to have that mindset to come in and compete. It is open, so when you have that opportunity, you gotta try and take a hold of that. I believe I just have to come in and compete at my highest level and try to get that job.

Q: What did you think of how Texas’ season went last year?

A: I thought it went pretty solid. Of course, you have your ups and downs, but through the whole fight, everyone kept putting us in that soft image. I think we overcame a lot. That was a learning year for the University of Texas, and I think it’s going to make us stronger in the future.

Q: So what about that label? Do you think Texas is soft? Do you believe that?

I don’t. I know what we have. I know the guys that we have there, what they’re capable of. From being at the top of the game, I can see where people put that image on us that we’re soft. Just because (of) how the season went. It’s a horrible image to have, but that’s what people put on us for having the season we had. You’ve got to go prove it.
