Posted February 18th, 2014

Our own Kevin Lyttle’s weekly Big 12 power poll for men’s basketball:

1. KANSAS (19-6, 10-2): Allen Fieldhouse should be just a bit noisy on Saturday, when the Jayhawks seek revenge that 81-69 beatdown in Austin. Last week: 1st. Next game: Texas, Saturday.

2. TEXAS (20-5, 9-3): Who could have imagined that Texas would beat Kansas to 20 wins? Now for Part II of Brutal Road Week. Last week: 2nd. Next game: at Kansas, Saturday.

3. IOWA STATE (19-5, 7-5): The Cyclones lead the nation in assists, and are the only team to rack up 70-plus points in every game. Last week: 4th. Next game: at TCU, Saturday.

4. OKLAHOMA (19-7, 8-5): Star Spangled Banner — undersized but tenacious Sooner post tops the league in rebounding. Last week: 3rd. Next game: Kansas State, Saturday

5. KANSAS STATE (17-8, 7-5): Lucky 13? The Wildcats’ home winning streak at the Octagon of Doom is in no danger vs. the hapless Frogs. Last week: 5th. Next game: TCU, Wednesday.

6. WEST VIRGINIA (15-11,7-6): Take away Texas, Kansas and Oklahoma State and West Virginia’s 7-1 in league play. OK, you can’t take them away. Last week: 6th. Next game: Baylor, Saturday.

7. BAYLOR (17-9, 5-8): Point guard’s triple-double was the Chery on top of the double-OT win. Then came another overtime win. Last week: 9th. Next game: at West Virginia, Saturday.

8. TEXAS TECH (13-12, 5-7): Senior forward Jaye Crockett is patrolling the frontier like Davy Crockett with his shooting, defending. Last week: 8th. Next game: at Oklahoma State, Saturday.

9. OKLAHOMA STATE (16-10, 4-9): Smart’s stupid move in Lubbock has led to three more Ls during the collapsing Cowboys’ seven-game slide. Last week: 7th. Next game: Texas Tech, Saturday.

10. TCU (9-15, 0-12): Can’t anybody here play this game? Kyan Anderson can. Junior guard is averaging 23 points this month. Last week: 10th. Next game: at Kansas State, Wednesday.

Note: Not accounting for tonight’s games, which involve the league’s top three teams — Texas at Iowa State, Kansas at Texas Tech.
