Reaction: Sterlin Gilbert turns down Texas
Posted December 11th, 2015
Just when Texas thought Sterlin Gilbert was coming to Austin, it all fell apart.
A member of the Art Briles coaching tree, Gilbert stunned the Longhorns and rejected the offer to be the new offensive coordinator on Friday.
He reportedly had accepted the position a day earlier.
Gilbert is the current offensive coordinator at Tulsa and a former Texas high school football coach. His rejection comes the same week TCU offensive coordinator Sunny Cumbie also declined the job.
Not surprisingly, the reaction to the news was mixed, and even the University of Texas’ president, likely dealing with so many other issues this week, weighed in.
I fully support Charlie Strong. I am committed to helping him move Longhorn Football forward.

Every team goes through waves of "Geez what can happen next?". But damn Texas A&M and Texas have had a rough 48 hours.

I saw a Texas fan tweet, "Why don't we just hire Art Briles as our Offensive coordinator?" Sorry bud, you're not THAT Texas anymore

Texas President Greg Fenves supports Charlie Strong. Fenves' spokesman says, “Social media reports are pure fiction that suggest otherwise.”

Texas is THISCLOSE to sticking Charlie Strong in the basement and just cutting off his checks until he realizes it. pic.twitter.com/DmOF7kmOX6

But not able to appease the concerns of an OC from Tulsa? https://t.co/iKac4CZqJa

Todd Dodge: Former UT QB/college coach, can recruit Texas schools, has a stud QB coming in '17, works 7 miles from DKR. Just sayin', Texas.

Go get someone from the HS ranks!!! There is so much coaching talent. https://t.co/HEkZFSQemC

The Texas OC situation is a dumpster fire but also a lesson in Journalism 101: not everything you read is 100 percent accurate.
— Cedric Golden (@CedGolden) December 11, 2015
I'm told that Texas President Gregory L. Fenves willing to give Charlie Strong "whatever he needs." Same was true before Baylor game, too.

Fans ripping Texas' apparent refusal to tell OC candidates Charlie Strong will last past '16 will also criticize if he's kept after bad '16.

Once you get shot down by Tulsa's co-OC, aren't you better off trying to making things work with the guys you have on staff? You're Texas.

At this rate of rejections, I'll be the Texas OC by January. #iruntheoptioninNCAA
