Texas recruiting trail: Things to do in Austin this weekend
Posted January 12th, 2016
A day after Alabama secured its 10th national championship, Texas football is preparing for an important weekend of recruiting.
There are 19 recruits visiting campus this weekend (see the list below). Many are already committed to Texas, and most are from the Lone Star State. But that doesn’t mean they’re familiar with the Austin area, the exception being Manor standout Erick Fowler.
With some help from the good people at Austin360, here are a few things these recruits can do while touring the Live Music Capitol of the World:
Go for a run
Austin is a runner’s paradise, and prospective recruits like Cibolo Steele defensive end Mark Jackson, currently committed to Texas A&M, may prefer Austin’s boardwalk over, well, any running trail in College Station.
Eat at Franklin Barbecue
(Ralph Barrera/American-Statesman)
New Orleans native Stephon Taylor is 6-foot-4 inches and 292 pounds of defensive tackle talent, and there are a handful of offensive linemen visiting this weekend . We’re guessing they could like some of the best barbecue on Earth. At the very least, someone ought to call ahead and at least bring the brisket to these guys. Just don’t hire someone to stand in line for you.
Eat at any of these places
Here is the 2015 top restaurant guide by Matthew Odam. Parties of 19 should probably call ahead with reservations.
Go to a concert
Austin is the “Live Music Capitol of the World.” There is music everywhere. Not sure what you want to hear? Head to the Austin Music Source blog to find out what’s going on.
Visit the Willie Nelson statue
There may be a good chance many of these prospects only know Willie Nelson for other things. But he’s an Austin music legend and has a statue not far from campus.
It’s on the corner of West Second (Willie Nelson Boulevard) and Lavaca streets.
Go to a basketball game
There is a good chance that at least one of these 19 recruits will attend a UT men’s or women’s basketball game this weekend. Texas men play Oklahoma State on Saturday. Texas women play one of the biggest games of the Big 12 so far on Sunday against Baylor.
