Instant reaction: Texas 8, Illinois 1
Posted February 27th, 2016
The headline: Texas’ bats wake up after morning lull
Where it went right: Texas coach Connie Clark tinkered with her lineup, benching leadoff-hitter Devon Tunning (1-for-8 in last 3 games at the plate_ and moving Lindsey Stephens to the lead-off position and playing Christina Bardwell at shortstop. It worked. Stephens went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and a pair of runs batted in. Midway through the game, Clark pinch hit for Stephanie Wong, who also had been struggling at the plate in the three previous games, going 2-for-7 in the last four games.
The starter: Junior Tiarra Davis gave up two hits and struck out seven batters. Illinois got its only run of the game in the top of the third after a Stephanie Ceo error led to a Fighting Illini run, their only one of the game.
Top hitter: Stephens got out of a slump with two doubles and two RBIs on a great afternoon at the plate.
Key stat: In her third appearance of the Texas Invitational, Davis doubled her total strikeouts. The junior has fanned 13 batters in three game.
Up next: 10 a.m., Sunday vs. Weber State
