The headline: Texas bats stay silent as Horns drop second straight game
Where it went wrong: Things went wrong from the start. Pitcher Paige von Sprecken threw just three strikes in her first 14 pitches. Tulsa then loaded the bases to set up Jocelyn Sheffield to hit a two-run double to left field, giving the Golden Hurricane a 2-0 lead. Designated player Taylor McAllister hit a single in the bottom of the second, but that was only one of two hits for the Longhorns in the first game of a double header.
The starter: Von Sprecken had a solid defensive effort behind her, but the sophomore wasn’t exactly effective in the circle. Tulsa got 11 hits and three runs against von Sprecken, who struck out two batters and walked three. She got out of jams in the fifth and sixth innings, having runners in scoring position with one out each time.
Top hitter: Texas had two players with one hit – McAllister and Celina Felix. Tulsa’s Jocelyn Sheffield was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
Key stat: The top of Texas’ battling order has gone 4-for-21 in the last three games. That’s a .190 batting average combined for Devon Tunning, Stephanie Wong and Lindsey Stephens.
