Where it went wrong: After taking a 2-1 lead on Tres Barrera’s third-inning groundout, Texas squandered chances to build further. In the fourth, Zane Gurwitz struck out with two runners on. In the fifth, Patrick Mathis grounded out with a runner on third. In the sixth, Gurwitz flew out with two runners on. It all contributed to UT’s sixth one-run loss of the season.
The starter: Kyle Johnston threw the first two innings on Friday and gave up the first run (unearned). From there, usual Sunday starter Connor Mayes took over and kept Tulane from scoring again until serving up a two-run bomb to No. 8 hitter Jarret Dehart in the seventh. Dehart’s blast sailed over the bullpen in right and landed onto Comal Street. Mayes finished with eight strikeouts and two walks in six innings.
Top hitter: Kacy Clemens, 2-3, 2B. Curiously, he was pinch hit for in the ninth for Jake McKenzie.
Key stat: Texas was 0 for 10 with runners in scoring position after going 1 for 11 at A&M on Tuesday.
Next: 4:41 p.m., Saturday vs. Tulane.
