Where it went right: Kacy Clemens and Joe Baker reached on head-first slides on consecutive seventh-inning at-bats. The next batter, Patrick Mathis, brought two runs in with a bases loaded single to left. Then, Zane Gurwitz added a third run in the inning on a high chopper that snuck through the right side of the infield.

The starter: Ty Culbreth struggled with command, walking a season-high four. The solo home run he gave up to Stephen Smith in the fourth made it 4-1 Tech. It wasn’t his best effort, but Culbreth regrouped and sat down eight of the final nine batters he faced before turning it over to Nolan Kingham in the seventh. Culbreth, the Big 12 wins leader, improved to 8-2.

Top hitter: Patrick Mathis, 2-3, 3 RBI. He now has six RBI in the series.

Key Stat: Ty Culbreth and Nolan Kingham retired 14 batters in a row before Kingham hit Stephen Smith with two outs in the ninth.

Next: 2 p.m. Sunday at Texas Tech.
