As Shaka Smart prepares Team USA, 5-star recruit adds Texas to top 6

Posted June 29th, 2016

Weeks away from leading Team USA’s Under-18 team in the world games, Shaka Smart’s other program received some encouraging news on Tuesday.

Jeremiah Tilmon, a 5-star power forward from East Saint Louis, Ill., narrowed his list of schools to six teams on Tuesday, as reported by ESPN’s Jeff Borzello:

Borzello later added:

Tilmon’s inclusion of Texas is another sign that Smart’s staff is recruiting big men well. After landing McDonald’s All-American post player Jarrett Allen and four-star recruit James Banks, both players are finalists for the Team USA’s U18 team. The 6-foot-10-inch Tilmon has eliminated heavyweights like Kentucky and Duke in favor of Texas.

While Tilmon is considering the Longhorns, he’s far from a sure thing with home-state Illinois hanging around along with blue-bloods North Carolina, Michigan State and Kansas in pursuit.

Other recruiting news

Four-star guard Brandon Rachal of Louisiana made and unofficial visit to Texas last week and spent some time with Shaka Smart while touring the facilities:

Meanwhile another prospect, Jarrett Culver of Lubbock Coronado, had his unofficial visit with Texas on Monday according to various reports. Culver, a 3-star recruit, is making his rounds this summer after taking an unofficial visit to TCU last week.

Here’s a nice little tweet-dunk of Culver:
