Texas sophomores Connor Williams and Malik Jefferson both saw themselves compared to some of the nation’s top upperclassmen on Friday with the release of more award watch lists.
Williams, the starting left tackle, was named to the preseason Outland Trophy watch list, as announced by the Football Writers Association of America. The award is presented to the nation’s best interior lineman. The full list includes 22 offensive tackles, 20 guards, 11 centers and 17 defensive tackles.
Williams was a rare athlete who stepped onto campus and immediately landed a starting job at one of the game’s most difficult positions. The Coppell product was an honorable mention all-Big 12 pick and a freshman All-American.
Jefferson continues to garner attention this preseason. He was already named to the watch list for the Bednarik Award. Now, he’s on the Bronco Nagurski Trophy watch list. Both awards are presented annually to the nation’s best defensive player. The Nagurski Trophy is also presented by the FWAA.
Jefferson, who graduated from Mesquite Poteet, has become the face of the Longhorns’ program. He played in 11 games last season and posted 61 tackles along with 2.5 sacks.
