Sports Illustrated: Charlie Strong could be next big-name coach on chopping block

Posted September 27th, 2016

LSU’s decision to fire Les Miles on Sunday has turned a lot of heads around college football.

It’s also started a discussion about who might be next. Sports Illustrated’s Andy Staples put together a list of possibilities, and he has Texas coach Charlie Strong at the top:

Beginning Saturday against Oklahoma State, we’ll find out if a more hands-on Strong has solidified the defense. The Longhorns still have to show significant improvement in Big 12 play for Strong to stay. The next few weeks should provide some answers.

Others on Staples’ radar include Auburn coach Gus Malzahn, Oregon’s Mark Helfrich and USC’s Clay Helton. It should be noted that Strong is the only coach on the list whose team has a winning record and a victory over a Power Five school in 2016.
