Old rivals Breckyn Hager, Baker Mayfield meet again

Posted October 5th, 2016

For Texas defensive end Breckyn Hager, it’s rivalry week in a multitude of ways.

Hager will be playing in his first Red River Rivalry when the Longhorns take on Oklahoma in Dallas on Saturday. His alma mater, Westlake, plays bitter rival Lake Travis on Friday.

Fuse the two together — and mix in the memory of a four-year-old loss that still stings — and you get a sense for the emotion coursing through Hager this week. He talked about it at Monday’s press conference:

Hager gets his first chance at revenge on Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield since the former Lake Travis star delivered a 97-yard bomb to beat Hager’s Chaparrals in 2012. Mayfield was then a senior, while Hager was a sophomore linebacker at Westlake.

Now, Mayfield is a senior at Oklahoma, and Hager is a sophomore defensive end for the Longhorns. It’s just another twist in the tale of two historically great rivalries.
