For the first time since 2014-15, both Texas basketball teams will begin their seasons ranked in the Associated Press Top 25 poll.
The Longhorns are ranked No. 8 in the women’s poll, released Tuesday.
Coach Karen Aston’s squad will start the year behind only Baylor from the Big 12. The Bears were ranked No. 2. Notre Dame claimed the top spot, with defending national champion UConn, South Carolina and Louisville rounding out the top five. Maryland and Ohio State were also ranked ahead of Texas.
The Longhorns finished 31-5 last season, making it all the way to the Elite Eight before falling to the eventual champion Huskies.
Like the men’s team, which is ranked No. 21, the women feature a young, talented core including ballyhooed recruits Joyner Holmes and Alecia Sutton. They also have leading returning scorer Brooke McCarty at point guard.
Texas opens its season Nov. 14 with a road contest against No. 11 Stanford in Palo Alto, California. That game will be televised on ESPN2 starting at 7 p.m.
