About the Longhorns: This is the final tuneup before coach Shaka Smart’s bunch takes its first road trip of the season to Brooklyn for the Legends Classic championship rounds. Granted, it’s still early this season, but Texas is averaging 14.1 seconds per possession, the 29th-fastest tempo in Division I. “We would like to play fast, but we need to make sure we’re playing through our bigs,” Smart said. … Freshman Jarrett Allen was named to the preseason Wooden Award watch list on Tuesday as one of the nation’s best individual players. … Kendal Yancy’s first two games were his best back-to-back outings since Oklahoma (14 points) and Iowa State (29) as a sophomore.

About the Eagles: Coach Jim Hayford’s scrappy team from the Big Sky conference held its own against Northwestern, a team Texas will face on Monday at Barclays Center. Bogdan Bliznyuk had a team-high 25 points on 10 of 19 shooting and Jacob Wiley added 19. The Big Ten-based Wildcats eventually captured an 86-72 win. … Eastern Washington is 0-8 all-time against current members of the Big 12 and 1-22 all-time against ranked teams. … “We’re fighting up a weight class or two this week,” Hayford said. “But it’s only going to make us better. We need to shake off the travel and figure out how we’re going to play Texas.”
