Report: Multiple Houston assistants will join Tom Herman at Texas

Posted November 27th, 2016

Coach Tom Herman’s staff at Texas will look similar to the one he assembled at Houston.

Offensive line coach Derek Warehime, tight ends coach Corby Meekins, special teams coach Jason Washington and defensive line coach Oscar Giles are all expected to join the Longhorns, the Houston Chronicle reported on Sunday.

There is still no indication whether defensive coordinator Todd Orlando or offensive coordinator Major Applewhite will join the Horns. Both are expected to be candidates to replace Herman at Houston.

Orlando was named Houston’s interim coach for the upcoming bowl game. Applewhite’s status is clouded by his involvement in the ongoing legal suit between the University of Texas and former track coach Bev Kearney, who is suing for race and gender discrimination.

Off the field, Fernando Lovo, Herman’s director of operations, will join the Longhorns. Herman has said previously that Lovo is like a “co-head coach” for his behind-the-scenes work.

Houston recruiting director Derek Chang, once a segment producer at Longhorn Network, is also expected to join the staff.

Herman is expected to address his staff at his introductory press conference scheduled for 5 p.m. Sunday, which will be carried on Longhorn Network.
