Pro Football Focus believes in the 2017 Longhorns

Posted January 10th, 2017

Everyone has a way-too-early top 25 list. Texas is a popular name on them all. But it looks like one site has more faith in Tom Herman’s squad than ESPN, USA Today, CBS Sports and SB Nation. All those sites have the Longhorns between 19-25. Most are citing the talent and a new coach as a reason for the ranking (overlooking the last two Texas games of the 2016 season, though).

But one site believes in the Longhorns more than the rest, and they have numbers to back it up.

Pro Football Focus, which usually uses lots of fancy football terms and numbers when they rank things, has the Longhorns at No. 14 in their early preseason poll.

Connor Williams, which PFF lauded throughout the 2016 season, gets a name drop in the blurb as the third-best graded offensive tackle in the nation during the past season. But that’s the only real numbers they drop. Generally, they believe the Longhorns will compete due to a schedule that has Oklahoma State and Kansas State coming to Austin and the arrival of a new coach.

Here’s what they say:

If Tom Herman can galvanize the team, the Longhorns have a schedule that could put them right back in the mix for the Big 12.
