Texas athletic director Mike Perrin said Tuesday he reviewed Casey Horny’s background to make sure the former Baylor staffer who once supported Art Briles was “in total alignment” with the culture at UT.

Football coach Tom Herman hired Horny last week as a quality control coach to oversee special teams. Horny, a graduate assistant with Herman at UT in 2000, spent the last nine years with the Bears, working mostly under Briles.

Last November, Horny tweeted the now-controversial #TruthDontLie hashtag in support of Briles, who was fired for his role in the school’s handling of sexual assaults. Horny also signed a letter, along with the rest of the Baylor staffers, that defended Briles’ actions.

All tweets meant to indicate Horny’s support of Briles were deleted after news broke of his hiring with the Longhorns. Horny’s name was never mentioned in any report issued by Baylor or Pepper Hamilton.

“The University of Texas does not tolerate sexual assault and is firmly committed to preventing it on our campus,” Perrin said in a statement. “We are working every day to continue our culture of preparing students to win with integrity in academics, in athletics and in life.

“Before approving the hiring, I spoke at length with coach Horny and reviewed his background and his role at previous universities,” he added. “Coach Horny committed to Coach Herman and me that he is in total alignment with our culture of integrity at The University of Texas.

“Like others, I question coach Horny supporting some commentary on social media.  After further discussion with Coach Horny, he understands such actions will not be tolerated at Texas.”
