Texas F Jarrett Allen named Big 12 newcomer of the week
Posted January 23rd, 2017
Texas freshman Jarrett Allen was named the Big 12’s newcomer of the week after two strong performances against No. 6 Baylor and No. 2 Kansas.
Allen averaged 19.5 points and 14.5 rebound for the Longhorns, who lost both games.
Still, Allen’s performance against the Jayhawks likely made him a shoo-in choice for this week’s award from the league office. Allen had 22 points and 19 boards, finishing one rebound shy of just the fifth 20-20 game in Texas history.

Allen’s rebounding total was also three shy of the Kansas record for rebounds by an opponent at Allen Fieldhouse.
“I think he was highly motivated, but you’ve got to give him credit in that he’s made major progress in terms of his consistency,” Texas coach Shaka Smart said Saturday. “In terms of maximum effort on plays, he’s made great growth. The great thing is he still has tremendous room for more growth. I can’t say enough about his progress.”
It’s the second consecutive week that Allen won this award. He was co-newcomer of the week last week.
