In a stunning Austin radio coup, longtime Texas radio voice Craig Way is leaving 1300 The Zone and joining 104.9 The Horn, the flagship station for UT athletics.
The move was announced just after midnight Friday by Austin Radio Network officials. Way will join the new station on Feb. 1.
According to a statement, Way will become ARN’s sports director for all network stations. He will remain the UT play-by-play commentator for football, men’s and women’s basketball and baseball.
Way, UT’s lead radio broadcaster since 2001, has been a longtime voice at KVET-AM and hosted an afternoon talk show. It’s unclear whether he will host a daily show on The Horn.
In September 2015, Way told the American-Statesman he planned on staying with KVET-AM for the foreseeable future.
“I’m planning on doing the Longhorn games, and the plan right now is to continue as a contracted employee of iHeartMedia to continue doing my show,” Way said at the time.
After ARN won the broadcasting rights away from iHeartMedia, Texas Longhorns football was broadcast on eight local radio stations, including two in Spanish, last fall as part of ARN’s reach.
It’s expected that Way will remain as host for the state-wide broadcast of the High School Scoreboard Live show on Fox Southwest.
