Update: Johnson is one of Texas’ most important signings for the 2017 class. The top-rated junior college linebacker in the country can make an immediate impact at the Mike linebacker spot in Todd Orlando’s aggressive defense. Johnson doesn’t possess the prototypical size of a middle linebacker. He’s a new-age linebacker with a safety’s speed and a linebacker’s instincts. A former Alabama commitment coming out of high school, Johnson likely gives Texas an instant starter for 2017, which potentially allows Malik Jefferson to move back to outside linebacker, a spot that’s more suited for his skills. It would be an upset if Johnson isn’t Texas’ starting middle linebacker in the season opener against Maryland. He chose Texas over USC and Oregon. Some schools felt he’s fast enough to play safety.
