Meet the new Longhorns: Hooks’ Montrell Estell ‘a freak athlete we want on our team’

Posted February 1st, 2017

Montrell Estell, ATH, Hooks

FYI: 6-2/180; No. 253rd-ranked overall prospect and the No. 11-ranked athlete. Ranked No. 40 on the Fab 55.

Update: Estell is an interesting prospect because of his versatility. Most schools recruited him as a wide receiver, but he chose Texas when Charlie Strong was still the coach because the Longhorns were willing to let him play defense. Most two-way prep stars prefer offense, but not Estell. He was an all-state safety his junior year, but also spent time terrorizing opposing defenses with overwhelming athleticism. Estell never wavered on his commitment when the coaching change happened, and it still looks like he’ll get the chance to compete on the defensive side of the ball. His ability at wide receiver, though, always leaves open the possibility that he could play offense at Texas.
