Remember in high school when you aced a test but maybe the teacher didn’t want you get cocky so you received an “A-” on it?
Well, Texas football, don’t get cocky, because Sports Illustrated just handed the Longhorns the same “Great job, but we’re nit-picking a bit, so here’s an’ A-‘ grade” on the Tom Herman hiring.
The lauded sports magazine graded all of the recent hires, with Purdue (Jeff Brohm), South Florida (that Charlie Strong fella) and San Jose State (whoever Brent Brennan is) receiving “A” grades.
On the other end, Florida International’s hiring of Butch Davis (the guy who has won at every college stop he’s been at) as a “D” grade. Herman’s replacement at Houston, former Texas quarterback Major Applewhite, received a “C” grade, while former Texas offensive coordinator Jay Norvell, now the head coach at Nevada, received a “B-” grade.
Herman was one of the hottest coaches in college football when Texas pick him to replace Charlie Strong in late November-early December. Of the hiring, here is why Sports Illustrated gave Texas the high marks:
He was the hottest name on the market, and the biggest school got its guy. Nicknamed the Quarterback Whisperer after navigating Ohio State’s trio of talented signal callers in 2014, Herman led Houston to a few big-time upsets over his two years. Now he’s stepping into a locker room full of talent in Austin. Herman underwhelmed on National Signing Day though, as Texas finished No. 28 nationally according to Scout.com’s 2017 team rankings.
