The Final Pitch: Rice 7, Texas 1
Posted February 19th, 2017
A sixth-inning meltdown soiled the end of Texas’ weekend as the Longhorns dropped a 7-1 decision to Rice at UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The defeat on Sunday dropped Texas’ record to 2-2, and head coach David Pierce settled for a split in his first series at Texas.
Led by Dominic DiCaprio and Brad Gneiting’s two-run doubles, Rice turned a 1-1 tie into a 6-1 advantage in the sixth inning. When the dust settled in the inning, Texas had surrendered five hits to 11 Rice batters and three Owls were either walked or hit by a pitch. Texas made three pitching changes during the session (one of which was done in the middle of an at-bat).
Rice (2-2) had three pitchers limit Texas to four hits and Bret Boswell’s fifth-inning homer.
After taking the next two days off, Texas will travel to Sam Houston State on Wednesday. UConn will be in Austin next weekend for a three-game series.
