Texas entered the weekend with a six-game winning streak, but the Longhorns opened Big 12 play with a 2-1 loss to Texas Tech on Friday.
It took 90 minutes to complete the first six innings as home runs from Texas Tech’s Michael Davis and Texas’ Tate Shaw — the ninth hitters in both batting orders — supplied the only runs. Texas Tech broke that 1-1 tie when Michael Berglund scored Hunter Hargrove with a seventh-inning double.
Ranked sixth in D1Baseball.com’s national poll, Texas Tech limited Texas to a season-low two hits. Texas, though, stranded at least one runner in four of the final five innings. Pinch-runner Tyler Rand was left on third base in the final frame.
Texas (13-7) and Texas Tech (15-4) will return to UFCU Disch-Falk Field at 4 p.m. on Saturday afternoon. Junior right-hander Morgan Cooper (2-0; 1.88 ERA) will start for Texas against Red Raider southpaw Steven Gingery (3-0; 1.47).
