Who is the most irreplaceable Longhorn next football season?

Posted May 25th, 2017

CBS Sports released its list of the 17 most irreplaceable college football players next season, and a Longhorn is on the list.

Junior linebacker Malik Jefferson falls in at No. 9 on reporter Ben Kercheval’s list. This shouldn’t be a big surprise for those who follow the Longhorns, as Jefferson has been one of the marquee players on the roster the last two seasons. The article gives its reasoning:

“He’s supremely gifted physically even though he’s still finding his niche and growing into his body.

But at least the ranking notes that Jefferson has some pretty big name recognition that has, at times, overshadowed his actual production. Jefferson noticeably struggled as a sophomore last season, following a Freshman All-American season in 2015. But CBS also points out that Jefferson is “the face of the Texas football team.”

That’s not a bold statement. He probably is.

But is he the most irreplaceable Longhorn? That can be argued by following Texas’ continued pursuit of a back-up quarterback.
