OKLAHOMA CITY — Texas’ run at the Big 12 tournament ended with a loss as Oklahoma State secured a 6-5 win in the conference’s championship game on Sunday.
The Longhorns scored first at the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark as Kacy Clemens and Bret Boswell drove in runs with two-out singles in the first inning. After Oklahoma State cut Texas’ lead in half, Kody Clemens gave Texas a 3-1 advantage with a third-inning single.
Texas (37-22) went to its bullpen ahead of the fourth frame — starter Morgan Cooper threw 65 pitches over the first three innings — and Oklahoma State attacked. The Cowboys (30-25) scored three times in the fourth before adding a run in the sixth. Bryce Fischer’s seventh-inning solo homer upped Oklahoma State’s lead to 6-3.
Behind a two-run showing in the seventh inning’s bottom half, Texas attempted a comeback. The game-tying run, however, was left at second base in the eighth and ninth innings.
Up next for Texas, which won the Big 12 tournament’s title in 2015, is the NCAA tournament. The NCAA’s selection show will be televised on ESPN2 at 11 a.m. on Monday.
