The Final Pitch: Texas 5, Long Beach State 3 (12 innings)

Posted June 4th, 2017

LONG BEACH, Calif. — Behind three home runs, a 12th-inning single and a couple of saves by its defense, Texas earned a 5-3 win over Long Beach State in a NCAA tournament game at Blair Field on Saturday.

The extra-inning conquest advances Texas into the championship round at the Long Beach State-hosted regional. Texas (39-22) will play either Long Beach State (38-18-1) or San Diego State (42-20) at 7 p.m. PST on Sunday. If it loses that match, those two teams will play once more for a trip to the super regionals.

After the Dirtbags scored Saturday’s first run in the first inning, UT infielder Bret Boswell and Long Beach State outfielder Brock Lundquist traded solo shots in the second session. Long Beach State quickly countered a seventh-inning homer from Boswell with a run of its own, but Zane Gurwitz tied the game in the eighth with his first home run since April 28.

Texas avoided a loss with highlight-reel defensive plays to end the ninth and 10th innings. With two outs in the top of the 12th inning, the Longhorns then took their first lead on Travis Jones’ two-run single.

Texas and Long Beach State both started pitchers on Collegiate Baseball’s All-American team on Saturday. Darren McCaughan threw seven innings of five-hit baseball for Long Beach State, and he retired 11 straight batters at one point. Texas junior Morgan Cooper, who had an out streak of 10 consecutive Dirtbags, went eight innings and surrendered six hits.
