Posted June 5th, 2017

LONG BEACH, Calif. — With a chance to move on in the NCAA tournament, Texas was dealt a 4-3 loss by Long Beach State in on Sunday night.

Texas (39-23) and Long Beach State (40-18-1) will return to Blair Field for a winner-takes-all regional match at 8 p.m. PST on Monday. The winner advances to meet Cal State Fullerton (37-21) in the super regionals.

After Texas rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the fifth inning, the Dirtbags and Longhorns traded runs in the sixth. That 3-3 score held until the eighth inning when Jarren Duran contributed a two-out single that drove in teammate Garrett Nelson, who had originally reached base when Texas catcher Michael Cantu couldn’t catch the pitch he struck out on.

Texas got baserunners aboard in the eighth and ninth innings, but UT couldn’t manufacture the tying run.

Long Beach State reliever Zak Baayoun was credited with the victory while Blair Henley took the loss out of Texas’ bullpen. The Dirtbags, though, got five solid innings from sophomore Tyler Radcliffe, who struck out seven during his first start of the season. Texas starter Kyle Johnston allowed six hits and three runs over seven innings.
