Top opponents for Texas in 2017, No. 86: Oklahoma State DE Cole Walterscheid

Posted June 8th, 2017

The countdown to kickoff is on. Over the 100 days before Texas takes on Maryland, we’re counting down the 100 best players the Longhorns will face in 2017. This series is all about impressing your friends at pregame tailgates and watch parties, so grab a notepad and buckle up.

Who is he?

Oklahoma State’s explosive offense is getting all the headlines this offseason, but the Cowboys might actually be deepest on the defensive line. Cole Walterscheid, a 6-foot-5, 260-pound junior defensive end, is expected to lead that group. He started all 13 games for the Cowboys last season, finishing with 28 total tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks.

What should the Longhorns watch for?

Walterscheid has put on some weight since his days playing for Class 2A Muenster (Texas) High School, but he hasn’t lost his explosiveness (watch below). With so much depth at the position (Jarrell Owens, Tralund Webber, Jordan Brailford and Vili Leveni all have experience) they should be able to keep bodies fresh. It should be a terrific opportunity for All-American offensive tackle Connor Williams to prove he’s worth a first-round draft pick.

They said it

Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy: “I handled him internally,” Gundy said, knocking his right fist against his left palm three times with a smile. “I got him taken care of, but yes, he will play.”

That was what Gundy said when asked if Walterscheid would play against rival Oklahoma after the defensive end was arrested and charged with public intoxication. Cowboys fans will hope Walterscheid keeps his nose clean this fall, lest he incur more than just his coach’s wrath.
