Texas sophomore quarterback Shane Buechele had a historically good freshman season in 2016, and his summer is going pretty swell as well.
Buechele attended the Manning Passing Academy at Nicholls State University in Thibodeaux, La. this weekend and won the quarterback challenge at the camp that’s hosted by Peyton, Eli and Archie Manning.

Buechele’s win over the weekend is another sign that the Longhorns may know who their starting quarterback is next fall, even though no official word has been made. After the true freshman passed for 2,958 yards– the most by any freshman in Texas history– and throwing 21 touchdowns in 2016, Buechele entered spring football as the clear leader on the quarterback depth chart.
Buechele defeated a host of signal-callers in the competition, including Heisman Trophy winner Lamar Jackson of Louisville, USC’s Sam Darnold and Alabama’s Jalen Hurts.
After this weekend, with another line on his resume added, Buechele’s hold on the starter’s job may have gotten stronger.
