In the dog days of summer, preseason expectations really begin to emerge.
What’s that? You didn’t need a silly list to tell you that Malik Jefferson is going to be one of the best college football players in 2017? Well too bad, because Sports Illustrated made one anyway.
Texas’ star linebacker came in at No. 40 on the countdown, which as of Wednesday included Nos. 100-21 with no other Longhorns.
Here’s what SI.com’s Eric Single wrote about Jefferson, who will surely receive more accolades as the preseason rolls on:
Jefferson struggled to deliver a fitting follow-up to his Freshman All-America campaign of 2015, when he finished second on the team in tackles, but his speed and razor-sharp change of direction should serve him well in a move to outside linebacker this fall, refining a key weapon for a Texas defense whose 3.42 sacks per game were the fifth-most in the nation.
There are still 20 spots left on the countdown, which runs through Friday, and we’re sure Texas fans will have some questions if left tackle Connor Williams doesn’t appear in one of them.
