Let’s use Texas’ roster, history and scouting reports to countdown to the start of the 2017 football season. Today, we are only 56 days away from Texas’ home game against Maryland.
Which Longhorn wears No. 56? Sophomore Zach Shackelford, who was the starting center in nine of Texas’ games last season. The 6-4, 305-pound Belton native was recently placed on the spring watch list for the 2017 Rimington Trophy.
Who also wears No. 56? Baylor DL K.J. Smith (67 tackles, seven sacks in 2016); TCU DL Chris Bradley (31 tackles, 3.5 sacks); Oklahoma State OL Larry Williams (five starts)
Fun fact about No. 56: Defensive end Kiki DeAyala set a UT record in 1982 when he recorded 56 quarterback hurries. As a team in 2016, Texas recorded only 15 quarterback hurries. That isn’t to say that the Longhorns weren’t getting at the quarterback, however. Texas’ 3.42 sacks per game in 2016 ranked fifth among the NCAA’s FBS-level teams.
