REPORT: Former Texas quarterback Matthew Merrick headed to Virginia

Posted July 11th, 2017

Former Texas quarterback Matthew Merrick is reportedly heading to Virginia to continue his football career.

Merrick decided to transfer earlier this season following his redshirt freshman season at Texas in which he served as a back-up to Tyrone Swoopes and Shane Buechele. The 6-foot-3-inch Merrick was a three-star recruit from Irving and chose the Longhorns over Colorado State and Nevada.

There is a connection with Virginia, where Merrick’s father played in the 1980s as a receiver.

In March, Merrick announced he was leaving Texas so he could focus on academics, saying “I’ll always consider myself a Longhorn and will be rooting them on in the future.”
