Let’s use Texas’ roster, history and scouting reports to countdown to the start of the 2017 football season. Today, we are only 34 days away from Texas’ home game against Maryland. Can’t wait that long? Tomorrow, the Longhorns will hold their first practice of the season.
Which Longhorn wears No. 34? Nobody. Texas retired Ricky Williams’ old number in 2000, and it was last used when Williams rushed for 208 yards in the Cotton Bowl on Jan. 1, 1999. Williams, who also wore No. 11 and 37 during his time at Texas, won the 1998 Heisman Trophy and is UT’s all-time leading rusher (6,279 yards) and scorer (452 points).
Who also wears No. 34? San Jose State RB Zamore Zigler (79 carries for 423 yards, 3 TDs in 2016); Kansas State RB Alex Barnes (56 rushes for 442 yards, 6 TDs); Kansas State DE Tanner Wood (34 tackles, 2 sacks)
Fun fact about No. 34: Eight UT receivers recorded at least 18 catches last year with Armanti Foreman setting the pace with his 34 receptions. The season before, Daje Johnson’s 37 catches led Texas. Before then, you’d have to go back to 2004 to find a season where Texas’ leading receiver didn’t haul in at least 45 passes.
