Following off week against Oklahoma, Collin Johnson replaced atop Texas’ depth chart

Posted October 16th, 2017

At the midway point of the football season, only two offensive players – left guard Patrick Vahe and receiver Collin Johnson – have started in each of Texas’ six games.

That number might get chopped in half on Saturday.

Johnson was listed as the back-up “X” receiver when Texas released its depth chart on Monday. Senior Dorian Leonard, who started seven times last year, is now expected to take the first snaps against Oklahoma State on Saturday. Leonard has eight receptions this year.

Johnson leads Texas with his 511 receiving yards, 191 of which were picked up in a double-overtime loss at USC. The 6-6, 220-pound target has had seven-catch games against Maryland, USC and Kansas State. He was also limited to two catches against San Jose State, Iowa State and Oklahoma. Johnson, the son of former Texas All-American Johnnie Johnson, was targeted seven times in last week’s 29-24 loss to Oklahoma.

“Collin did not have his best game. Dorian is playing well, so that’s why,” Texas coach Tom Herman said when asked about the change on the depth chart.

Herman was asked a few questions about his receivers at his weekly press conference. He noted that Jerrod Heard had was the only receiver who graded out as “champion” in the loss to Oklahoma. Herman also said the receivers had been doing a good job of blocking in the run game but needed to improve their play whenever the quarterback scrambles.

Herman also told reporters that senior Armanti Foreman practiced well last week, but he has not earned more playing time than Reggie Hemphill-Mapps or Heard. Foreman, whose 17 catches rank third among the Longhorns, has not appeared in UT’s last two games. He was listed as the third-string “H” receiver on Monday.
