Texas, Alabama schedule home-and-home football series

Longhorns will host first game at Royal-Memorial Stadium, Crimson Tide will host in 2023

Posted May 16th, 2018

In a major football scheduling announcement, Texas announced Wednesday it has reached a home-and-home agreement to play Alabama in the 2022 and 2023 seasons.

The Longhorns will host the first matchup on Sept. 10, 2022, the school announced. The Crimson Tide will then return the favor on Sept. 9, 2023.

To accommodate the scheduled matchups, Texas and Ohio State have mutually agreed to postpone their home-and-home series a few more years. The Longhorns and Buckeyes were scheduled to meet in 2022-2023. Now, that series will be played in 2025-26.

The Longhorns and Crimson Tide have not met since the 2009 national championship game. Alabama won 37-21, but most UT fans remember it as the game quarterback Colt McCoy was injured on the fifth play of the night.

Overall, Texas holds a 7-1-1 advantage in the all-time series. UT ranks second in all-time victories with 898 while Alabama ranks fifth with 891. The two schools have only met three times on their traditional home fields โ€” the last coming in 1922. All matchups since the 1947 Sugar Bowl have come in postseason appearances.

Also on Wednesday, Texas announced that UTEP has been added to the 2020 schedule. UT is 5-0 in the all-time series and last faced its El Paso sister school in 2016.

A game against Central Florida, scheduled for 2023, has also been cancelled, the school said.

Texas still has more work ahead to complete future football schedules. In 2019, the Longhornsโ€™ three scheduled non-conference opponents are Louisiana Tech (Aug. 31), LSU (Sept. 7) and at Rice (Sept. 14).

In 2020, Texas is scheduled to play South Florida (Sept. 5), at LSU (Sept. 12) and now UTEP (Sept. 19).

There are still one open slot on each schedule ranging from 2021-24. UT is scheduled to play Michigan in a home-and-home series in 2024 and 2027.
