Posted June 28th, 2018
Purdue, VCU and Providence highlight the 2018-2019 Texas men’s basketball non-conference schedule as the Longhorns look to build a résumé in hopes of returning to the NCAA Tournament in March.
The Longhorns will host Big 10 power Purdue on Dec. 9 at the Erwin Center, four days after facing coach Shaka Smart’s former team, VCU, on Dec. 5.
The games are part of a six game home stand in December that also features Radford, Grand Canyon University – coached by former NBA star Dan Majerle – and UT Arlington.

The matchup against the Mavericks on Dec. 28 is a homecoming for new coach Chris Ogden, who played for Texas and was a student assistant coach in the 2003-2004 season before joining Rick Barnes’ staff. He spent 12 seasons at Texas and helped recruit a handful of NBA draft picks such as Avery Bradley and Myles Turner.
Providence, from the Big East, and Purdue were NCAA Tournament teams last season.
The highlight of the non-conference season comes away from Austin in Las Vegas, where Texas joins Michigan State, North Carolina and UCLA for a two game tournament over Thanksgiving.
Texas had previously announced games against Arkansas in El Paso and was paired with Georgia in the Big 12/SEC Challenge in January 2019. The Big 12 Conference schedule has yet to be announced.
Texas’ only true non-conference road game will come against Georgia.
