Texas’ David Pierce named Baseball America college coach of the year

Posted July 10th, 2018

Texas coach David Pierce guided a team that stood 9-9 early this season all the way to the College World Series. That type of work was among the nation’s best, according to Baseball America.

The well-respected baseball magazine named Pierce its national college coach of the year on Tuesday.

The Longhorns finished the season as the Big 12 champs, hosted an NCAA regional and super regional and finished the year with a 42-23 record. All of this happened after the death of longtime UT coach Augie Garrido, once the winningest coach in Division I history. Pierce wore Garrido’s No. 16 jersey in the opening game of the CWS as a show of respect.

Pierce was an assistant at Rice under coach Wayne Graham and helped the Owls win the 2003 national title. But this was his most successful year as a head coach at the Division I level.

“When we won the conference championship and some things fell into place for us, you knew this team was doing things right and they were playing at a level for each other, they were playing with confidence,” Pierce told the magazine. “When that happened, you saw them feed off each other.”
