Texas coach Tom Herman on watch list for coach of the year

Posted July 12th, 2018

In his first year of eligibility at Texas, Tom Herman is on the preseason watch list for the Dodd Trophy.

First-year coaches are ineligible, but Herman did enough in his rookie season with the Longhorns to be considered an early candidate for the most prestigious coaching award in college football.

The Big 12 is well-represented, with Mike Gundy, Gary Patterson, and Lincoln Riley joining Herman on the list of 20 coaches. Texas’ early-season clash with USC will pit Herman against a fourth coach from the watch list in Clay Helton.

Mack Brown is the only Texas coach to win the Dodd Trophy in 2008, when he led the Longhorns to an 11-1 regular season and berth in the Fiesta Bowl in 2008.

In addition to on-field success, the award accounts for scholarship, leadership and integrity. Stanford coach David Shaw was the 2017 recipient after the Cardinal finished 9-5.

Herman won the Broyles Award in his final season as an assistant coach, helping lead Ohio State to the national championship in 2014 as the offensive coordinator. He made the Dodd Trophy watch list in his second season leading Houston in 2016.
