Top opponents for Texas in 2018, No. 12: Baylor WR Denzel Mims

Posted July 30th, 2018

Football season will be here before you know it. Through the dog days of summer, we’re going to get you prepared with a series on some of the best players Texas will face in 2018.

Who is he?

Denzel Mims answered all the questions that were being asked of the Baylor receiving corps in 2017. The sophomore from Daingerfield, Texas, picked up the torch left by KD Cannon and continued a seven-year string of Bears receivers reaching 1,000 yards. He finished with 1,087 yards and eight touchdowns on 61 receptions, an average of 17.8 yards per catch. Now a junior, Mims is the top returning Big 12 receiver in yards per game (90.6).

What should the Longhorns watch for?

Mims has basically everything you want in a No. 1 receiver. He’s 6-foot-3, extremely fast — he won the Class 3A state title in the 200-meter dash as a senior — and is good in the air. Most importantly, he’ll have help this season. Speedy target Chris Platt returns from injury, and former Tennessee running back Jalen Hurd has potential to be a breakout star.
