Sam to start: ‘Barring any sort of catastrophe,’ Texas to go with Ehlinger against Maryland

Posted August 20th, 2018

Using a caveat or two, Texas coach Tom Herman has named sophomore Sam Ehlinger his starting quarterback for UT’s season opener against Maryland.

On Monday, Herman announced that Ehlinger had beat out junior Shane Buechele and incoming freshmen Cameron Rising and Casey Thompson for the starting gig. Herman told reporters that Ehlinger took the bulk of the first-string reps at Monday’s practice. Buechele ran mostly with the No. 2 offense.

“Barring any sort of catastrophe between now and the Maryland game, that’s the way it will be,” Herman said.

Ehlinger started six times during the 2017 season. He totaled 13 touchdowns and was UT’s leading passer (1,915 yards) and rusher (381 yards). He also had key turnovers in losses to USC, Oklahoma State and Texas Tech.

Buechele threw for 1,405 yards and seven touchdowns over his seven-start season in 2017. He also started in all 12 of UT’s games in 2016.
