Speaking on the Big 12’s conference call on Monday, Texas coach Tom Herman had no updates about the health of quarterback Sam Ehlinger’s shoulder.
When asked about Ehlinger’s first-degree shoulder sprain, Herman deferred to the statement released by Texas on Sunday. According to Herman, hope remains that Ehlinger will be able to pick up the football after resting and rehabbing this week.
Herman also praised back-up quarterback Shane Buechele, who led Texas to a 23-17 win after Ehlinger was injured in the first drive of Saturday’s game against Baylor. When asked why Buechele quickly fit into the Texas offense, Herman talked about the junior’s preparation. He re-told a story from Saturday’s postgame press conference about Buechele recently practicing a quarterback sneak with an imaginary center while the No. 1 offense simultaneously ran the same play.
“I don’t think anybody was any bit concerned when he jogged into the game,” Herman said.
Here are some other tidbits from the 10 minutes that Herman spent with the conference’s reporters:
- Herman said that left guard Patrick Vahe suffered a knee sprain near the end of the Baylor game. He has since been cleared to practice. The versatile Elijah Rodriguez, who has started at right guard and center this year, replaced Vahe and Texas used Derek Kerstetter at right guard.
- With Texas heading into its bye week with a six-game winning streak, Herman said he was not concerned about losing any momentum. Herman said the bye week came at a good time and the team was “excited to take a deep breath.” UT will use its week of idleness to get bodies and minds right for its final stretch of games.
- Herman said he was calling from a parking lot at Lancaster High. Texas is currently eyeing cornerback Lorando Johnson, a four-star member of the 2020 recruiting class.
Since Texas is on a bye this week, Herman will not participate in his weekly press conference with the local media on Monday.
