This weekend, bragging rights and a conference championship will be on the line. The Golden Hat will not be.
Texas (9-3, 7-2 Big 12) and Oklahoma (11-1, 8-1 Big 12) are set to battle at Arlington’s AT&T Stadium in the Big 12 Championship Game on Saturday. This is the first time that the two schools have met in the conference’s championship contest. This is also the first time since 1903 that the Longhorns and Sooners have played twice in the same season.
Since 1941, the winner of the Red River Showdown has earned the Golden Hat as a yearlong keepsake. On Sunday, Texas athletics director Chris Del Conte was asked on Twitter if this weekend’s winner will get to celebrate with the wearable trophy. Del Conte replied that the Golden Hat is only up for grabs during the annual get-together at the Cotton Bowl.

The Golden Hat, by the way, is currently in UT’s possession. The Longhorns beat Oklahoma 48-45 on Oct. 6.
