The Final Pitch: Texas 4, UT-Rio Grande Valley 3

Posted March 5th, 2019

Two days after it completed a dramatic comeback against LSU, Texas needed another rally to secure a 4-3 win over UT-Rio Grande Valley.

Held hitless over the first three innings at UFCU Disch-Falk Field on Tuesday, the Vaqueros led off the fourth frame with a walk and a single. Texas pulled starter Matt Whelan, who had walked three batters, but reliever Kamron Fields also had issues with his control. Fields threw two wild pitches that freshman catcher Caston Peter couldn’t stop and UT-RGV scored on both plays.

After the teams traded runs, Texas (11-3) found itself trailing 3-1 in the eighth inning. The Longhorns loaded the bases with their first three batters, and Austin Todd tied the score on a two-run single. Eric Kennedy and Todd then executed a double-steal on the next pitch. That set up Texas to take the lead on a sacrifice flyout by pinch-hitter Tate Shaw.

UT-RGV (9-4) was looking to snap a 44-game losing streak against Texas. UT-RGV was last triumphant in this series in 1971 when it was known as UT-Pan American.

First baseman DJ Petrinsky made his 10th start of the season on Tuesday. Petrinsky didn’t play against LSU after Texas coach David Pierce started Shaw in the series opener and then kept his lineup intact for the rest of the weekend. Petrinsky has yet to return to the catcher position this spring because of an ailing shoulder.

NOTABLE NUMBER: 4. Todd and Kennedy combined for four hits, two runs and three RBIs against UT-RGV. On Monday, Todd was named the Big 12’s player of the week. Kennedy won the weekly award that the conference gives to newcomers.

UP NEXT: Texas will leave on Wednesday morning for a four-game series at Stanford that begins the following day. Stanford and Texas have met every year since 1998, and the Longhorns trail 42-35-1 in the overall series. Ranked 12th, Texas is listed six spots behind Stanford in the D1Baseball poll.
