Texas has announced that freshman Ty Madden will start on Tuesday when the Longhorns battle Incarnate Word at San Antonio’s Wolff Stadium.
This season, Madden is 3-0 with a 0.52 ERA. He has also struck out 21 batters over 17 1/3 innings. A 6-3 right-hander who was selected by Kansas City in the 34th round of the 2018 MLB Draft, Madden will be making his third career start.
This will also mark Madden’s first outing since a 4-3 win over Texas Tech on March 17. That relief appearance was cut short after 2/3 inning because of a shoulder injury. UT planned to have Madden resume throwing this past Thursday, but he did not pitch over any of last week’s five games.
Madden will be opposed by Incarnate Word senior John Shull (0-0, 6.75 ERA). This spring, Incarnate Word (15-9) ranks 10th nationally with its .311 batting average. The Cardinals have scored at least six runs in nine of their last 11 games.
Texas (17-10) was ranked 13th in the D1Baseball poll on Monday. In addition to Incarnate Word, UT has three home games against Xavier on this week’s schedule.
