Cyera Hintzen powers Texas soccer to 1-0 win over No. 17 Kansas

Posted September 26th, 2019

After missing three matches with a head injury, Cyera Hintzen plugged right back into her usual role for Texas on Thursday. That is, scoring match-winning goals.

Hintzen struck in the 70th minute as Texas upset No. 17 Kansas 1-0 in the Big 12 opener for both teams.

The Longhorns (6-4, 1-0) spent most of the match defending, but a pinpoint pass from Emma Regan gave Hintzen the space she needed. Regan was near midfield on the right side when she sent a looping ball over the Kansas defense for Hintzen to run onto. The senior forward’s first touch sent the ball past a Kansas defender and goalkeeper Sarah Peters.

The goal was the 11th match-winner of Hintzen’s career and her 25th overall, passing Kasey Moore for the fifth-most in school history.

Kansas (8-3, 0-1) possessed the ball for long stretches and held a 12-9 advantage in total shots, but the Longhorns made the most of their opportunities, putting five shots on goal to just one for the Jayhawks. Texas travels to face Kansas State  at 1 p.m. Sunday in Manhattan. The Wildcats fell 1-0 in overtime to Baylor on Thursday.
