Texas has added some three-point shooting and experience to its 2020 recruiting class.
The Crimson reported over the weekend that Harvard guard Katie Benzan will join UT’s basketball program in 2020 as a graduate transfer. Benzan told Harvard’s student newspaper that she plans on signing with Texas in November. It had previously been announced that Benzan would forgo her senior year at Harvard and sit out the 2019-20 season.
The 5-6 Benzan has built a reputation as one of the greatest sharp-shooters in the Ivy League’s history. She broke Harvard’s single-season three-pointer record in each of her three years on campus. Over her college career, Benzan has established a .395 shooting percentage from deep. Her 287 career three-pointers are Harvard and Ivy League records.
A three-time all-conference honoree, Benzan also led Harvard in assists during her freshman, sophomore and junior seasons.
Harvard never qualified for the NCAA tournament with Benzan, but the team did go 17-13 this past season. During her junior year, Benzan had 19 points and 10 assists in a 85-79 win over a ranked Cal team. She also scored 18 points in a loss to Rutgers. Both Cal and Rutgers eventually reached the NCAA tournament, and the Golden Bears advanced to the second round
Texas has two senior guards on its current roster — Sug Sutton and Lashann Higgs — so Benzan’s arrival should help fill that impending void. In addition to Benzan, UT’s 2020 recruiting class features high school guards Shay Holle and Ashley Chevailier. Post players Elyssa Coleman and Precious Johnson will also sign with Texas next month.
