The arrival of two former champions and trips to Houston and College Station are among the highlights on the UT baseball team’s 55-game schedule, which was released by the school on Wednesday.
This season, Texas will spend two of its first three weekends in Houston. The Longhorns are set to open their 2020 campaign with a three-game series at Rice from Feb. 14-16. The team will also participate in the 2020 Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic, and that showcase at Minute Maid Park will feature games against LSU, Arkansas and Missouri.
The home opener for Texas will be held on Feb. 18 against UTSA. UFCU Disch-Falk Field will also host four-time national champion Arizona (March 3) and 2018 NCAA Tournament qualifier McNeese State (May 12). The Big 12 teams coming to Austin are Oklahoma State (March 27-29), Baylor (April 9-11), Kansas (April 17-19) and TCU (May 8-10).
From March 6-8, Texas and Cal State Fullerton will engage in a three-day battle in Austin. Those two schools have combined for 10 national championships. The late Augie Garrido coached both programs, and 88.7 percent of his 1,975 wins and all five of his NCAA titles were recorded with the Longhorns and Titans.
Texas must travel to Oklahoma (March 20-22), West Virginia (April 3-5) , Kansas State (April 24-26) and Texas Tech (May 1-3). Texas and Texas A&M will reunite in College Station on March 31.
Texas went 27-27 and did not qualify for the postseason in 2019. All-Big 12 pitcher Bryce Elder will anchor the Longhorns’ pitching staff this spring. UT is also poised to return three starters in the outfield. Additionally, senior catcher DJ Petrinsky will return after missing much of this spring with a shoulder injury.
