Tough tests on Texas’ 2020 softball schedule include Big 12 rivals, NCAA’s defending champion

Posted November 6th, 2019

To be the best, Texas is going to have to beat the best.

Ten games against five teams that qualified for last year’s Women’s College World Series are among the highlights of UT’s 2020 softball schedule, which was released by the school on Wednesday. UCLA, the NCAA’s defending champion, is set to host Texas on Feb. 27. Texas will meet Washington in a California-based tournament and travel to Alabama for two games. Oklahoma State will play three games in Austin in April, and Texas’ conference-opening series at Oklahoma is scheduled for March 20-22.

Texas opens its 56-game schedule with a home game against Wichita State on Feb. 6. McCombs Field will be the site for 30 of UT’s games this season.

Last year, Texas welcomed head coach Mike White with a 46-17 record and a trip to a super regional in Tuscaloosa, Ala. In addition to losing three seniors, Texas had four players either transfer or leave the program during the off-season. Hitting coach Kerry Shaw was also replaced with Steve Singleton.

Pitchers Miranda Elish and Shealyn O’Leary will be back in 2020. All-American infielder Janae Jefferson is among seven returnees who recorded 100 at-bats last season. Additionally, Texas signed five freshmen and welcomed UCLA transfer Colleen Sullivan.
