Texas plans on redshirting junior defensive back Josh Thompson, the school confirmed on Tuesday.
The announcement confirms an earlier report by Inside Texas. A Texas spokesperson said there is a chance that Thompson could return this season if he is needed. Given the current state of the Longhorns’ 2019 campaign, however, that scenario seems unlikely.
Thompson has only appeared in four games this season, so he is still eligible for a redshirt under NCAA rules. Thompson suffered a broken bone in his foot in UT’s 36-30 win over Oklahoma State on Sept. 21. He has not played since.
A member of Tom Herman’s first recruiting class, Thompson has played in 26 games since his arrival at Texas in 2017. The six-foot, 200-pound Nacogdoches product has started three times. This fall, Thompson has been responsible for 12 tackles.
